If you are taking tablets or medicines long term, your doctor may arrange for you to have repeat prescriptions by issuing you with a computerised slip. At least a week before your drugs have run out tick the required items on this slip. You can either:

Every year the NHS counts the cost of unused or wasted medicines. A recent audit revealed that, for an average practice, it was estimated that £225,000 was spent on unused (stockpiled) or wasted medicines.
There are a number of steps that can be taken by patients to help reduce the amount of money we are currently wasting on medicines including:
Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs). The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.
These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.
If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.
